Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a serious potentially blinding eye condition in which the intraocular pressure is elevated beyond what the optic nerve can tolerate, resulting in loss of the visual field.

This can happen rapidly in acute angle closure glaucoma and rather more slowly in chronic open angle glaucoma. Both can lead to blindness if undetected. With treatment of eyedrops, lasers and drainage surgery, vision can be preserved.
