Dr. Ong Sze Guan's Lecture

Assoc Professor Dr Ong Sze Guan was invited to speak at 2 meetings this year. From Mar 27- 29 2008, he was invited speaker at the Chinese Ocular Fundus Society Meeting held in the ancient capital of Xian, China. This is an annual meeting of vitreoretinal surgeons in China and this was attended by over 500 delegates. Invited speakers from the United States, Europe and Asia spoke at the 3 day meeting which focused on the latest advances in medical and surgical retinal conditions. Topics included latest ocular imaging techniques with 3D OCT, HRA, current indications for intravitreal injections of Lucentis and Avastin. A Prof Ong delivered a paper on “Myopic Foveoschisis-Results of Vitrectomy”. The meeting included a tour of Xian which was the ancient capital of China most famous for the Terracotta Warriors.

From April 23 to 25 2008, A Prof Ong attended the 1st Bali Ophthalmology Retreat. This meeting was jointly organized by Klinik Mata Nusantara, Jakarta and the Lions Eye Institute.Perth. The key impetus for this meeting conceptualized by Dr Sjakon Tahija was to provide a relaxed and informal environment for ophthalmologists from the region to meet and discuss current topic of interest. Unexpectedly the meeting attracted over 100 delegates from 13 countries to the beautiful island of Bali, renowned for its beaches and tranquility. A Prof Ong delivered a plenary lecture titled “Macular Surgery – Current Approach and Outcomes”. Other topics of interest were on phakic IOLs, Intralase Lasik, multifocal IOLs and complicated cataracts as well as diabetic retinopathy and retinal detachments. We certainly look forward to the meeting again next year!
