Pentacam

This revolutionary piece of equipment has uses in both cataract management and refractive surgery.

Everybody develops some degree of cataract as they age; one novel use of the Pentacam is that it is able to image the cataract denseness so that we can monitor the status of the cataract year after year in an objective fashion.

With so many patients having undergone LASIK surgery in the past decade, more and more post-LASIK patients are requiring cataract surgery now. And one of the biggest problems after LASIK surgery is the difficulty in measuring the true corneal curvature, the importance of which is alluded to in the paragraph above on cataract surgery. The Pentacam is the only corneal topographer currently able to measure the true and accurate corneal curvature or power after LASIK.

We also have the latest iteration of the IOL Master as mentioned above; this has special programmes inbuilt to also allow us to compute a lens implant power accurately after LASIK surgery.

Again, the multifunctional Pentacam is able to image the layers of the cornea, particularly after LASIK, to image the corneal flap. It is also invaluable in assessing anterior chamber depth.
